Who Needs Certification in Ontario?
Under Ontario Regulation 493/17 (Food Premises), at least one certified food handler must be present on the premises at all times during food preparation and service. This applies to all food premises including restaurants, food trucks, catering operations, grocery store delis, institutional kitchens, and temporary food events.
Regulatory Body
Food safety in Ontario is regulated under the Health Protection and Promotion Act (HPPA). Enforcement is carried out by 34 local Public Health Units (PHUs) through Environmental Health Officers who conduct routine inspections and respond to complaints.
The DineSafe Program
Toronto's DineSafe program is a model inspection disclosure system. After each inspection, establishments display a coloured sign: Green (Pass), Yellow (Conditional Pass) with specific corrections required, or Red (Closed) for immediate health hazards. Results are searchable online. Other Ontario PHUs have similar disclosure programs.
Certification Cost and Renewal
Food handler certification in Ontario costs $40 to $100 depending on the provider. Certification is valid for 5 years. After expiry, you must complete a new approved training program and pass the exam. Many employers cover the cost as part of employee onboarding.
